My Hair Journey
My hair loss started in the fall of 2019. It was Thanksgiving and My dad was experiencing chest pains. He went to the hospital to have it checked out, which turned into the doctors telling him he needed a heart valve replacement immediately. He spent the next fews days in the hospital before he went in for surgery. This was the first time I came to the realization that maybe my dad wasn't invincible. I was worried sick. Thankfully the surgery went well, we brought him home and he started down the road to recovery. A few months later I remember while washing my hair in the shower, my hands were covered in loose strands of hair. I kept pulling at my ends and more and more hair kept coming. This is when I discovered my first bald spot. It was small, about the size of a thumb print, and located at the back of my head just above my hairline. I looked online and everything I read said it was related to stress. Easy enough I thought, I’ll manage my stress and my hair will grow back.. Soon My once bald spot was now covered in stubble. The hair continued to grow to the point where the spot was no longer visible. I remember thinking, ok that wasn’t so bad. A few months went by, and then I received another bald spot. Then I noticed hair missing at the nape of my neck, multiple smooth circular patches. I didn’t understand why this was happening. I hadn’t experienced any other stressful events, so shouldn’t my hair be healed?
This pattern continued for the next few months and into 2020. And then of course covid happened.. A bald spot on the back of my head formed to the size of baseball. At this point I was extremely discouraged, I could no longer hide the fact that my hair was falling out. I had appointment with my doctor where I was prescribed Cipralex for anxiety and was referred to a specialist for my hair. The specialist had told me my white blood cells were attacking the hair follicle and causing my hair to fall out. I was given steroid injections into my scalp, and was told that it would help to regulate my immune system and reduce inflammation, therefore helping my hair to grow back. My hair started once again to fill in and I was certain this time I was done with the hair loss. And for the next 6 months or so I was.
At the end of 2020 I was laid off work, which ended up being good timing. My grandma, who I was very close with, became sick. Her health was deteriorating quickly. The doctors suggested to arrange for her to live out her time in hospice. We then scheduled her in, and for the meantime we were taking care of her at home. We had home care come in twice a day to assist us, other than that it was family who was caring for her. It was extremely hard for me to watch my grandma become a shell of the person she once was. My aunty and I were caring for her the night she passed away. This was my first time witnessing someone passing. I started experiencing night mares of the event as well as panic attacks and of course, the hair loss started again.
I decided to start therapy as I needed someone to help me sort through all of these emotions I was experiencing. But I knew something was missing still. I had struggled with eczema since I was a child and was always looking for ways to help my skin. I came across Medical Medium because I saw pictures of someone who had healed their skin using his protocols. I went out and bought his book Cleanse To Heal. I began applying his information to my own life starting with lemon water & celery juice and was noticing positive changes. I dived even deeper to learn the truth about hair loss and that it actually had nothing to do with my body attacking itself.. “Adrenaline from emotional events and life stressors can have a major impact on the health of your hair. When you experience a painful situation or serious hardship, adrenaline floods your system, affecting your liver, skin, and hair. Under stress, your hair may develop a straw-like texture and fall out. These symptoms can occur after a hardship takes place and may continue for a period of time unless you provide your body with the nourishment and support it needs.” - Medical Medium.
I started supporting my adrenal glands and liver, consuming foods that helped to heal the body and therefore the hair, and removed the trouble maker foods from my diet. I focused on “grazing” making sure I was eating something every 1.5-2 hours, as going extended periods of time without eating can put further stress on the adrenals.
Fast forward to 2024, I was able to not only heal my skin but my hair is healthy and strong and i’m no longer on any sort of medication for anxiety. I haven’t experienced a bald spot in just shy of 2 years and my hair is thicker than ever before.
Healing is possible.
